Twitter and Bharti Airtel Partnership

Twitter formed a partnership with Bharti Airtel, the largest carrier in India. Now you can receive twitter updates via SMS in India for free. Sending in Twitter updates from SMS still costs the normal SMS rate.

Bharti and MTN Wont Merge

Bharti Airtel of India and the MTN Group of South African rival called off a $24 billion deal to create a low-cost telecommunications giant. The deal fell apart as a result of differences from the South African and Indian governments. This is the second failed attempt at a merger between these two companies. Deals of this nature can be difficult because of immature capital markets of developing countries and hands-on governments, which make corporations less independent than their counterparts in developed economies.

China Adds Patriotic Ring-back Tones

The New York Times has an interesting article about China’s mobile phone service company has changed customers’ ring-back tones to a patriotic song ahead of the 60th anniversary of the People’s Republic.

A ring-back tone is what a caller hears once a number is dialed but before the other party picks up. Many providers outside of the US provide the ability to customize the ring-back audio of a phone.  The standard tone is a repetitive ring. Here is the US most users still associate the standard ring with the actual bells that were used on the original land line phones, not realizing that the tone is actually a digital music file like an MP3. The phone carriers consider the new patriotic theme a gift to their users.

Users are given other options of ring-back music if they do not wish to have the patriotic song that was selected for them. In China ring-back tones are big business, accounting for hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue (source).

Globes New Tattoo Prepaid SIM Cards

Globe Telecom Launched 4 new Prepaid SIM cards called Tattoo. The new cards simplify the globe Prepaid SIM card options in the Philippines.

The Tattoo SIM cards come in 4 flavors. There is one prepaid SIM card for Calls, text and internet, and 3 different SIM options for calling and texting with no internet. The call and text SIM is available in P100, P300, and P500. In addition to this simplified offering Globe also redesigned the graphics on the SIM cards.

Recharging load on these new SIMs works the same as the previous Globe SIM cards. Learn more here »
